Aluminium foams offer a high potential for lightweight construction especially as core structures in sandwich components. Due to their limited forming properties at room temperature, in this project the fundamentals of forming aluminium foams at high temperatures are investigated. In connection with a suitable joining technique manufacturing of three dimensional formed sandwich parts using the cost-effective melt route foams should be realised. Recent work mainly referred to deep drawing of aluminium foams. A process window was drawn up in consideration of certain damage tolerance for manufacturing a rectangular cup from an aluminium foam plate. Brazing and adhesive bonding proved to be qualified as joining techniques.
