Tailored Carburization - Gradation of mechanical properties in the direction of sheet plane and sheet thickness

Project Status: Active

Members

Focus of the research project is the development of basic methods for a local adjustment of mechanical properties of hot stamped high strength steels. For this purpose, the semi-finished parts will be coated with graphite and subsequently austenitized and carburized in a furnace. To graduate the mechanical properties, carburization will be prevented locally by applying boron nitride instead of graphite. First of all, process-specific boundary conditions and process parameters regarding the diffusion behavior of complex phase steel CP800 have to be developed. For example, this includes the mutual influence of carburized and non-carburized areas at the transition zones. As quenching occurs inside the forming die, the influence of parameters like contact pressure and contact state have to be analyzed thermoanalytically and mechanically. Finally, the developed influences will be validated by transferring them to a model geometry.
