Mechanisms in three-dimensional forming with laser induced thermal stresses

Within this project the potentials of laser forming for the generation of complex shaped sheet metal parts are investigated. The quantitative analysis of the forming capabilities of the process is performed using empirically and numerically optimized irradiation patterns, which in the regular case consist of numerous linear and/or non-linear irradiation lines. Through a variation of the order of irradiations distinct stress states that positively influence the efficiency of the following irradiations can be generated in the work piece. In addition, the overall heat input by the numerous laser irradiations can be distributed more smootly, leading to a significant reduction of the local heat input. This is especially important if materials with thermodynamically unstable components, such as hardenable aluminium alloys or transformation hardenable steels, have to be used for laser forming. Therefore, investigations of the laser induced changes of the materials properties are a main task of the project.
