Process Modeling and Temperature Control of Laser Chip Removal

Laser chip removal is a controlled ablation mechanism for ferrous materials. However, further basic research work is the very prerequisite for a fast process enhancement and the qualification towards an industrial standard. Therefore, the idea of this project is to establish a profound process knowledge and deduce therefrom steps in order to increase the ablation rate. Three basic items determine the process boundaries. These are the temperature gradient, the diffusion depth and the melting depth. Imposing a definite temperature control leads to a shift of these niveaus and thus entails as well variations of the maximum laser power and the maximum feed rate.
