Experimental System Analysis of the Laser Beam Welding Process Dynamics

The automation of the laser beam welding process LBWP and the manufacture of uniform high-quality weld seam topologies requires process monitoring and closed-loop control to identify and compensate parameter deviations which can occur in practical operation of the uncontrolled LBWP. Since joint properties can become irreversible within milliseconds, this project researches the fundamentals of a multi-variable control of the weld seam geometry in real-time kHz-update rate. To minimize the computational burden on the controlling DSPs, the control parameter ?seam geometry?, which requires intensive camera-based online measurements / calculations, has to be transferred to signals more simple to process. Thus the ?transfer? 1 process parameters - 2 plasma shine - 3 seam geometry was investigated by synchronous measurements and was analyzed utilizing techniques of system identification, image processing and pattern recognition.
