Use of Laminated Elements in a Flexible Tool System

The aim of the project, realized in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Insitute for Machine Tools and Metal Forming IWU Chemnitz, was the investigation of the operational behavior of laminated drawing tools. The laminating of the drawing tools and the generation of the NC-programs for laser cutting were fully done with computer aid. Two manufacturing strategies were developed for the production of horizontally laminated tools in order to correctly approximate the drawing radius. In strategy 1 the fitting of the drawing radius was done directly by the combination of various lap angles and sheet metal thicknesses. An approximation of the drawing radius by oversized sheets which are finished, e.g. by HSC-milling, represents strategy 2. The packaging of the lamellas and the arrangement of the lamella-packages on the massive tool-elements was done by a combination of laser beam welding or adhesive bonding and screwing.
