Cooperative project: Intelligent Tools for the Economic Production of Metallic Prototypes with Near to Series Quality and Small Series for Gravity Casting and Die Casting

Moulds with integrated tempering ducts intelligent tools enable the production of parts with optimized and defined properties. Such hollow structures near to the surface can be realized by casting of metallic tube elements or by manufacturing of the tool by metal foil LOM. The metal foil LOM technology is based on the use of a 3d CAD model of the tool and it consists of two main steps. After the laser assisted generation of a foil stack geometrical equivalent to the tool the stability of the foil stack is improved by final joining. The stacking procedure itself results of a combination of layer fixing and contour generation. The final joining is re-alized by diffusion welding. In consequence of the high resulting accuracy of the mould the metal foil LOM technology shows a big potential of application in the field of Rapid Manufacturing for the future.
