Influence of Laser Structuring on the Tribological Properties of Ceramic Parts in Forming Processes

Ceramic materials are especially because of their high wear resistance well suited for appli-cations with high tribological loads. In metal forming ceramic tools or tools with ceramic inserts in tribological highly loaded areas are used successfully as well. The surfaces of the tool and the workpiece have significant influence on the frictional state in the forming proc-ess and the process boundaries, the process stability, the product quality and the tool life consequently. Therefore this project deals with the influence of different methods of surface finishing on the tribological properties of ceramic sheet metal forming tools. Besides con-ventional methods of surface finishing such as grinding or lapping excimer laser material processing is considered as well. The influence of roughness, characterised by the arithmetic mean roughness Ra, of ground and lapped Si3N4 tools on the coefficient of friction, measured in the strip drawing test, is depicted as a function of normal pressure and drawing speed in the picture.
