Metal forming of microparts bulk metal forming

Project Status: finished

In the field of bulk metal forming the project A3 investigates the production of billets or specimens for micro forming processes. In the past the main focus of this project were miniaturization effects that were studied by performing scaled extrusion experiments. In order to achieve geometrically similar scaled specimens, a lot of time and effort has been put in the production of these specimens, applying techniques which can be used in lab production only. Now, the specimens are manufactured by shearing from wire as it would be done in industry. The sheared front and end faces of the specimens are characterized by different zones: edge draw-in, smoothly sheared zone, fracture zone and burr. The formation of these zones can be influenced by varying the shearing speed, temperature, clearance between the shearing tools and axial pre-loading pressure. The main goal of this project is to investigate the above mentioned relationship between the shearing parameters and the resulting specimen surface and to find the optimum for the subsequent extrusion process. Currently, the shearing tool is being designed and built and the extrusion tool modified. The specimens will be manufactured from CuZn15 wire with a diameter of 1.0 mm.
