Laser-Assisted Roll Forming

The aim of the laser assisted roll forming is the enhancement of the material- and physical-conditioned forming limit of roll forming of materials, which are difficult to form. One example are high strength steels. The heating up of the sheet takes place continuously with a diode laser in a special flexible roll forming system. A laser beam is positioned in front of the pair of rolls on the sheet, so that the sheet is heated up while it moves in the roll formig machine. This area is heated up, in which the plastic bend bending line or the plastic longitudinal deformation band edge of the profile leg takes place. The results are the extension of the forming limits, the degradation of the quality determining form deviations and the decrease of the mechanical load for the roll forming system. By the example of the MS-W1200 it could be shown that the maximal attainable bending angle could be increased from 90° by cold forming up to 170° by a laser assited roll forming.
