Integrated Manufacturing by Forming, Joining and Cutting - Hydroforming of Sheet Metal Pairs and Tubes

The integrated tube-double sheet hydroforming is an innovative technology for the manufacturing of complex hollow parts in one step and in one tool. The tube-double sheet part, which was manufactured in the previous phase of the project C3, presented a relevant need for optimisation. The geometry of the joining zone was improved and a tailored tube was used for the manufacturing of the component. The experimental results showed, that the carried out modifications led to an improvement of the formability of the part and of the robustness of the process. Due to the new geometry of the tubular component, the forming operation takes place without applying sealing elements on the outer surface of the tube. The contact between the front sides of tube and blank sheets allows furthermore transmitting the axial force acting on the tube to the blanks, thus increasing their draw-in in the die during the forming operation and, as a consequence, the formability of the part.
