Hydroforming of sheet metal pairs from Al and Mg-alloys using a warm pressure fluid

The objective of this project was to improve the formability of Lightweight materials like aluminium and magnesium alloys in the hydroforming process HF of sheet metal pairs by conducting the process at elevated temperatures. The project was finished successfully mid of 2001. Experimental tests were conducted on three different part geometries round cup, rectangular box, shallow complex 3D-freeform using the developed system for hydroforming at elevated temperatures. It was proven that a temperature distribution can influence the strain distribution in the part. At the same time the necessary pressure and blank holder force is reduced enabling the manufacturing of large parts with small presses. For magnesium alloy blanks conducting the process at elevated temperature is the only way to obtain a well formed part.
