Qualification of Technical Ceramics as Tool Material for the Warm Forging of Steel

Project Status: finished


Main Objective of this project is the qualification of the technical ceramic Silicium Nitride as a tool material in warm forming. For this purpose, a forward extrusion die for the production of the chassis of a constant-velocity-joint was chosen in close cooperation with industry. A FE-analysis of the process and tool design was used to calculate the local stress-strain-state of the die. The friction factor as a mean influence parameter of the FE-model was identified for different lubrication systems at the ceramic die / steel workpiece-interface by the Double-Cup-Extrusion-Test DCE-Test. Having regard to the objective friction behavior in the FE-analysis, a tooling system has been designed, which completely avoids critical tensile strains even after the warming of the tool system during the production process. The results in industrial practice are showing the potential of ceramic inserts to enhance the wear resistance of the tool and the surface quality of the workpiece.
