Application based multi-layer coatings for cold forging tools and their validation by innovative test procedures

The high tribological loads in cold forging processes often cause an early tool failure. The aim of the project is to achieve a considerable shift in tool life by PVD-multilayer coatings, which are applied according to the application and loads of the processes. For the determination of the loads on the tools FE-simulations are carried out. The contact normal stresses and the sliding distances of the processes are calculated since they were identified as the main factors of the tribological loads in cold forging. To investigate the efficiency of the coatings their mechanical and tribological properties are determined. Wear behavior of the coated tools is characterized in a combined punching-forward extrusion test and in industrial applications. The results are summarized in guidelines for the application adjusted selection of multilayer coatings.
