Warm forming to improve the formability in the field of micro forming

With decreasing part dimension so called size-effects are gaining influence on the forming process of metallic microparts. The observable results caused by the miniaturisation are an increased scatter of process characteristics and a reduced accuracy of the parts. Warm forming – covering the temperature area between cold and hot forming – is suitable to reduce these size related impacts. In addition an improvement of the forming behaviour and an extension of the forming limits of microparts can be achieved as a result of the elevated temperature. Due to the excellent biocompatibility, the great strength and the low density, titanium and titanium alloys arouse increasing interest for miniaturized parts in the field of medical engineering and implantology. Therefore the impact of elevated temperature on the forming behaviour of micro specimens diameter 0.5 mm, length 0.75 mm of titanium commercial pure Ti c.p. and TiAl6V4 is investigated.
