Active structures with integrated piezo actuators provide plenty possibilities for the mechanical engineering. These structures can be used for sensoric as well as actoric funktions. They could, for example, monitor their own status and so initiate specific reactions on their mechanical load. This may be used for performing a matching action for protecting the passengers of a car in case of a crash. As a second example, the sensoric functions could be used to calculate the remaining life time of a structure depending on its operational conditions. In actoric mode, the active structure can be specifically deformed. For example, an active car body sheet can compensate vibrations, reducing sonic emissions without the need for heavy damping materials. Such active structures may currently not be produced in industrial mass production because of lacking production technologies. Providing these technologies is the purpose of the research project SFB/TR 39 .High-Volume Production-Compatible Production Technologies for Lightmetal and Fiber Composite-Based Components with Integrated Piezo Sensors and Actuators. . short: .PT-PIESA.. Several german universities and institutes cooperate closely working on this project. The Bavarian Lasercenter works out plans and technologies for the electrical and mechanical bonding of the piezo modules to be integrated into the structures. Additionally, the needed circuit carriers are developed. The concepts are being shaped specifically on the production processes of the structure itself. Micro soldering, micro welding and laser droplet welding are used for bonding the actuators.
