Bavarian Research Cooperation "Flexible Tool Systems - ForWerkzeug" - Subproject B1: Technology Integration for the Manufacturing of Serial Tools by Metal Foil LOM

Project Status: finished

The requirements on the production of tools have significantly changed in the last ten years, especially in the field of deep drawing and injection molding. The reasons therefore are the use of new materials and manufacturing technologies as well as the increasing efforts on light construction. Often cheap tools with a reduced lifetime must be produced as fast as possible. During this research project special techniques of Rapid Tooling are combined for the manufacture of serial tools adapted to especial requirements. NC milling, sheet metal LOM and automated metal foil LOM were chosen because of its complementary properties. The main focus hereby is the further development of metal foil LOM and the integration of this technology into tool manufacturing. This technology shows the possibility of realizing complex cooling structures in a tool and the replacement of the time and cost intensive eroding during the tool production because the tool is built up of layer with a thickness of 100 µm.
