Functional Protective Coatings for Cold Forging Tools

The economical and technological importance of tool life improvement in cold forging requires an extended functionality of wear resistant coatings. Therefore the main focus of this project was the analysis of how modern surface and coating technologies contribute not only to increasing the wear resistance but also to improving the fatigue strength of cold forging tools. In the final stage, the results from basic experiments were confirmed by tool life inspections in industry. For TiN coatings applied on cold forging punches by PVD, the appropriate pre-treatment of the substrate cold working and high speed steel, for example by plasma-nitriding so-called duplex treatment or micro shot blasting, turned out to contribute decisively to improving the adhesion of the coating as well as the short and high cycle fatigue strength of the compound of coating and substrate.
