Flexible Section Bending with a Polyurethane Pad

This new section bending technology with kinematic shaping is especially suited for the production of variable curvatures. The relative movement between the tool elements can be described as a path curve in an X-Z-coordinate system. The path curves necessary to achieve a desired curvature can be established using the finite element method as well as using neural networks. Process planning systems have been developed for both calculation methods. Their efficiency was analyzed in different validation experiments. The figure below shows the result of a path curve generation using neural networks, which have been trained by the output of bending experiments carried out before with different section types. As can be seen from the diagramm, even in the first bending process a good agreement between the bent section?s actual curvature and the given desired curvature can be achieved. The accuracy at the following bending processes can be increased further by tuning the path curve.
