Adaptive Bending of Aluminium Extrusions

Aluminium extrusions show heavy variations in strength and cross section properties, which cause different extents of springback at bending and thus prevent economic applications of bent aluminium extrusions in mass production. In order to increase the reproducibility at stretch bending, a control strategy has been developed in this project. Input information for the process control can particularly be gained from the recording of the force at the bending die versus the travelled distance of the clamping devices during the initial phase of bending. The relation between the process information and the respective springback of the extrusion is stored in a neural network. In order to obtain the desired curvature, a certain value of spingback ratio has to be set. The neural net allows the determination of the optimal axial tension and its adjustment during the process.
