FEM-based process design for controlled stretch bending of extruded aluminium profiles

The use of three-dimensional shaped aluminium profiles is becoming increasingly important in light weight constructions mainly in automobile production and requires controlled bending processes in order to reduce subsequent treatments. A so-called adaptive process control for bending processes has been developed in the frame of past research activities. In order to achieve process control strategies, tool and machine designs in a fast and reliable way the existing experiences will be used to develop a simulation method based on the Finite Element Method. Beside the construction of tool geometry and estimation of occurring process forces the simulation should provide the functional relationship between the spring back ration K and the axial tension stress sax. This relationship represents the transfer function of the control system which determines the control strategy.
