Basic research on enhancing the process of laser beam welding of plastics

Laser-transmission welding of plastics joins two overlapping parts with different absorbing capacities. The laser beam is transmitted through the optically transparent at the laser wavelength part and is completely absorbed within the surface layer of the optically dense part. Direct contact between the parts ensures heating of both components at the joint interface. Welding occurs upon melting and fusion of both materials at the interface. Basic interactions in the structure of polymers are investigated within this research project in order to find an optimised processing strategy. Absorption is very important due to its influence on the point of heat build-up and the geometry of the melt pool at the interface. Further research investigates both the alteration of the melt pool volume and the melting and wetability behaviour of the components. The aim is to gain profound knowledge in order to enhance the process of laser transmission welding of plastics regarding faster machining speed and improved process reliability to utilise the process for alternative joining geometries.
