Fundamental process knowledge of warmforming of shaft-shaped workpieces
with overhanging geometrical elements

The term warm forming specifies a process in which the workpiece is heated up to a temperature between the cold forming and hot forging temperature. The aims of the project are to determine the temperature depending material parameters necessary for the numerical simulation and in order to enlarge the capability potentials of this process. The lateral extrusion process is used to determine the influence of elevated temperature on the process limits. It is a characteristic experiment for testing the different shaft-shaped workpieces with overhanging geometrical elements. Therefore mechanical properties and microstructure of the deformed material are examined. The variation of process parameters and calculations with numerical process simulation lead to basic process knowledge of the warm forming of steel.
