Prevention of hot cracks at the beginning and the end of laser welded seams in aluminium with a controled temperature distribution

Research, which is investigating the hot-crack susceptibility of the aluminum alloys in the 6000 group, has been conducted for a long time. The complexity of the problem is underlined by the fact that a complete solution is yet to be found. Using some kind of filler material of-fers a possibility, but this can only reduce the crack susceptibility and does not prevent it. Another possibility is to use a controlled temperature field. This governing could be achieved by an adequate parameter choice e.g. power and time of the laser. Using these and other laser parameters, the laser welding could be modeled with an FE program. After realizing the thermal and mechanical analysis, the results of the FE calculation should be used in an adequate hot-crack theory. Using the e.g. Prochorow or Pellini hot-crack theory in the FE simulation, coupled with experiments, it could be decided whether a parameter-set is suitable for crack-free welding.
