Investigation of Non-linear Dynamical Effects of Laser Beam Melt Ablation

Laser ablation offers several advantages, especially in the processing of extremely hard materials. Although the process of melt ablation is very simple in theory, it has a major limitation: with increasing ablation rate, the surface quality of the material processed declines rapidly. Depending on the process parameters, different periodic structures caused by non-linear interactions can be observed. However, the experimental data can be described at present only by a periodically modulated stochastic process, the modelling of which is in that form not possible. Therefore an alternative approach is chosen: stochastic parameters are defined, which signal and help to identify the transitions between the different process behaviours. This offers the possibility for the early recognition of structure formation and possibly also for regulation with or without interfering with the process.
