Bulk microforming of small metal components from strip

Project Status: finished


A high production rate of small components is possible by bulk microforming processes. The handling of small workpieces is an important research topic, as it limits those multi-step processes which are necessary for the production of complex geometries. Microforming from metal strip is a possible solution, allowing the use of strips as means of mobilization of the workpiece between the forming stages. Within the project different extrusion processes are analyzed by simulation. Complementary the micro-scale effects on the process are investigated by experimental study. A modular tool has been developed in order to research both isolated forming stages and the complete process chain. The deformation of the strip during the extrusion is limited by the integration of two early punching stages. Currently the forming limit and the stability of a single forming step and of the entire process chain are analyzed and characterized in order to define forming rules for bulk microforming processes from metal strips.
