Functional Charakterization of Tool Surfaces

Project Status: finished

Cemented carbides are increasingly used as tool materials in cold forging. Manufacturing of tool geometry is often done by electrical discharge machining (EDM) or by grinding due to the high hardness of cemented carbides. The surface integrity of the tool has a significant influence on the failure mechansisms wear and fatigue. The tool surface is polished in a finale processing step for improvement of tribological conditions. In this project the surface properties and their influence on the tool behavior were investigated and characterized by functional surface parameters. Aim of the project was to gain knowledge for an optimized cemented carbide tool production in terms of tool surface quality and profitability of tool production. Results show that the tool behavior is influenced by hard machining. In this regard the fatigue strength for the process chain grinding and polishing is higher compared to EDM and polishing.
