Reduction of CO2-impact by weight reduction achieved by bending and hydroforming of steel and aluminium tubular parts for body and chassis applications

With regard to an use in the process chain tube production - tube bending - tube hydro-forming a new bending technology for tubes has been developed at LFT. The spatial tube bending using a elastomer pad is a flexible and cost-effective kinematic technology. The shaping is realised continuously by pushing a tube in an elastomer tool. The spatial curvature derives from a force application which is angular to the tube axis. Following the production of the bending tool a process controller was programmed and implemented. Additionally a 2D FE-model has been developed and the influence of the geometry of the elastic matrix on the contact stresses at the tube and the resulting tube ovality and bending stresses has been investigated and verified by experiments.
