Hydroforming of Magnesium Sheet Metal

A promising strategy in the reduction of energy consumption and thus exhaustion of cars is the reduction of the cars weight. The use of light weight materials like magnesium sheet metal is of special importance. However, the use of magnesium sheet metal in modern cars is currently hindered by the lack of knowledge concerning the material behavior and suitable forming processes. Thus the basics for hydroforming at elevated temperatures of newly available magnesium sheet metal in close to production quality will be researched in this project. As magnesium has a reduced formability at room temperature in comparison to steel or aluminum, the temperature will be elevated to 200 °C. The use of the improved formability caused by changes in the materials grid will be researched here. Additionally the development of hydraulic components suitable for temperatures up to 310 °C will be carried out with partners from industry.
