System Engineering for the Production of Microparts by Cold Forging

On multi-station formers microparts can be produced economically with high production rates about 5 parts per second, high complexity and high accuracy. Within this research project the LFT had to develop a fast and reliable cross transport between the single forming stations for parts, which are made from wire with a diameter less than 0.5 mm. A promising system for the transport is the combination of vacuum grippers with a linear direct drive. The focus of the development was to bring the reliability and the accuracy of the system to an optimum few microns. For the investigations a digital image processing system was developed to determine the exact position of a part. The prototype of a modular designed single-station former, which was developed in collaboration with partners from industry, is available at the LFT for further investigations.
