Non-metal, bioactive bone substitute materials and the tailored generation of implants by laser beam sintering

On the basis of 3D-datasets, individually shaped endoprotheses for oral and maxillofacial surgery are to be generated from the high-performance polymer poly ether ether ketone PEEK by means of laser sintering. Due to its outstanding mechanical and chemical properties PEEK covers a wide area of applications in medical technology. Furthermore, PEEK is suited for an application as implant material because of its excellent biocompatibility. For example, it has already been approved by the FDA for an application as hip prosthesis.
