Conception of an adaptive process chain for mechanical joining - Mechanical Joining 4.0

Objective of the research project is the utilization of process data in the sense of industry 4.0 for the joining by forming of sheet components. Hereby, deviations of semi-finished parts and processes shall be compensated and adaptive methods for joining processes shall be developed. The project is funded by the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations (AiF) and the European Research Association for Sheet Metal Working (EFB) and worked on by the Laboratory for Material and Joining Technology (LWF) of the Paderborn University, the Institute of Manufacturing Technology (LFT) of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Large Structures in Production Engineering (IGP) in Rostock. Within the project influences on the joining process and the resulting joint characteristics are analysed for the complete process chain for the example of clinching. The research focus at the LFT is the analysis of relevant information from process parameters, which are gathered during cutting and joining operations. The basic knowledge on the correlations between the production of a part and its resulting properties are the fundament for the development of automated and adaptive clamping and joining systems, which are able to compensate deviations that derive from the production of the part. Next to the gathering of the process data from each individual production step, main aspects for the complete linkage of the process chain are the analysis and exchange of the data and a continuous numerical simulation of the process chain.
